Silver is both a mineral and an element. Silver is one of the most prized metals that has been used as a currency and in jewelry for thousands of years. It is one of the world's oldest forms of currency and is part of the seven metals of antiquity, the first metals used by humans in prehistoric times. Silver and many other elements found on the periodic table were formed billions of years ago during a cataclysmic supernova explosion of a dying star. Silver can be found on Earth as a primary mineral in hydrothermal veins and volcanic basalt rocks. It is formed from sulfur compounds beneath the earth's crust and also forms as a secondary mineral by breakdown of polymetallic ore deposits. Silver can be found as a pure mineral, but is often mixed with small amounts of gold, arsenic, and antimony. 

Silver is a very resistant metal and will not dissolve in most solvents. It has an adverse reaction to sulfur and sulfides, causing it to tarnish on exposed surfaces. Silver is the best conductor of electricity, the second most maleable and ductile metal; one gram of silver can be thinned to a wire up to 1 km long. Silver is a major component of many electronic devices, circuit boards, and similar items. The word “silver” is derived from an Old English word "seolfor" and its meaning is unfortunately lost. In ancient Rome, Silver was called “Argentum” and is abbreviated as Ag on the periodic table. Silver was more expensive than gold in Egypt until around the 15th century BC.

Care: Avoid prolonged exposure to heat (or extreme heat), direct sunlight and contact with abrasive surfaces or chemicals. Remove before contact sports, weight lifting or activities where it may come into contact with force. As always, minerals higher on the hardness scale should be stored away from it. Silver jewelry should not be exposed to egg yolks as they contain sulfur compounds causing it to tarnish much faster.
