Hypersthene the trade name for a mineral variety belonging to the pyroxene group, a class of inosilicate minerals commonly found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. The name Hypersthene is derived from the Greek words “hyper” and “sthenos” which together meaning “over strength” referring to its hardness. Hypersthene is the intermediary between those two minerals. Enstatite contains more magnesium, ferrosilite contains more iron and Hypersthene is in the middle with about 50% iron.
