Sugilite, also known as Wesselite, is a rare and highly collectible, complex cyclosilicate mineral composed of sodium potassium lithium silicate. It was first discovered in 1944 on the Iwagi Islet by the Japanese petrologist Dr. Ken-ichi Sugi and named in his honor. Sugilite's enchanting purple-pink hues are due to trace amounts of manganese in the crystal structure. The primary source of Sugilite is the Wessels Mine in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, which has been a significant producer of top quality Sugilite since its discovery in the 1970s. Its also found in small amounts in Japan, Canada, and India. Sugilite is piezoelectric meaning it has ability to generate a small electric current when pressure is applied.
