Carnelian is the trade name for translucent orange-red chalcedony, a variety of Quartz. It frequently forms with bands of white agate in the chalcedony which is colored by impurities of iron oxide. Carnelian is found all over the world with significant deposits in Brazil, India, Madagascar, Uruguay, and the United States. The name Carnelian is believed to be derived from the Latin word "carnis" meaning "meat" or "carne" meaning "flesh". Some believe the origin of the name to be associated with the cornelian cherry tree that produces edible red fruit.

Carnelian is a popular semiprecious gemstone that has enchanted humans for thousands of years. The earliest known Carnelian beads discovered were on a gold necklace found at a gravesite in Bulgaria that dates to between 5300-4800 BCE. In ancient Egypt, Carnelian was associated with the Sun god Ra and believed to hold protective powers. Carnelian was often used in ancient Egyptian jewelry, amulets, and seals, and was often buried with the deceased to ensure safe passage into the afterlife. Carnelian is still worn in Egypt to ward off the evil eye and promote peace.

Throughout history, Carnelian was associated with royalty and healing of the circulatory system. It was also used to increase libido and support the reproductive system.
