Lapis Lazuli is an uncommon rock composed of several minerals including Lazurite, Haüyne, Sodalite, and Nosean (all members of the sodalite group). Lapis Lazuli commonly has inclusions of Pyrite and/or Calcite (Calcite tends to lower the value; can appear as a streak or make the overall color lighter). Lapis Lazuli was named after the latin word “Lapis” meaning stone and the Persian word “Lazhward”, meaning blue. Lapis Lazuli's primary source is Afghanistan with other notable deposits in Chile, Russia, Canada, Argentina, and Pakistan. It has also been found in smaller amounts in the United States.
