Shungite is a carbon-rich mineraloid, composed of up to 98% carbon and formed more than 2 billion years ago. Its a fossilized material that formed from sediments that date back to the Precambrian period, 4.6 billion years ago when Earth began to form. Shungite formed from decomposed prokaryotes mixed with mud and silt, transforming into a mineraloid through a process called metamorphism. Prokaryotic cells are single-celled microorganisms known to be the earliest living organisms on earth.

Shungite contains fullerenes which are 3D spherical molecules made of 60 or more carbon atoms. Fullernes are considered to be the most powerful antioxidants or free-radicals absorbants. Shungite is only found in Karelia, Russia and named after the Shunga village. Its broken down into 3 types: regular Shungite (type 3, contains 30-50% carbon and has a dark black color), Petrovsky Shungite (type 2, contains 50-70% carbon and has a gray color), and Elite Shungite (contains more than 90% carbon and has a silvery, metallic gray color). Shungite's carbon content is what makes it incredible for healing, with the higher grades of Shungite containing higher levels carbon are most effective.

Shungite is most famous for its incredible purification properties. In ancient Rome, Shungite was used in aqueduct systems to remove impurities from the water. It was used in the 18th century as pigment for paint. Shungite was also used to purify water in Russia's first spa in Karelia by Peter the Great. It also has been used as paint pigment and in construction as insulating material.
