Rose Quartz
Rose Quartz is an abundant mineral found all over the globe and is the 5th anniversary stone. Rose Quartz is the trade name for the pink variety of the mineral Quartz, made of silicon and dioxide. The pink color of Rose Quartz is caused by microscopic inclusions of a pink mineral similar to Dumortierite. Due to these inclusions, Rose Quartz is rarely transparent, although it's found all over the globe. It typically forms as a translucent mass of intergrown anhedral crystals. Rose Quartz rarely occurs with well-formed crystals, this variety is known as “pink quartz”.
Sometimes in Rose Quartz (and other stones like Ruby and Sapphire), reflections of light from a network of fine rutile crystals create a beautiful "star" also known as an asterism, on the surface of the gem (must be a properly cut gem or sphere shape). The star's position depends on the location of the light source and the position of the observer.
The use of Rose Quartz in jewelry dates back to 7000 BC in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) where Rose Quartz beads were found. Ancient Egyptians believed Rose Quartz would prevent aging. Many ancient civilizations across the globe used quartz in amulets for protection and healing.
