Heliodor
Heliodor is the yellow variety of the mineral beryl, composed of beryllium aluminum silicate. Pure beryl is colorless, however, inclusions within the mineral cause beryl to form in a variety of colors. Heliodor belongs to the same mineral family as Aquamarine, Emerald, Morganite and Red Beryl (Bixbite). The beautiful sunny, yellow color of Heliodor is usually caused by small amounts of iron within the mineral's crystal structure. Heliodor is sourced from Madagascar, Brazil, Namibia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Russia, and several other countries.
The name "Heliodor" is derived the Greek words helios, which means "sun" and doron, which means "gift" meaning "gift from the sun". Heliodor is also known as “Golden Beryl”.
Helidor forms in granitic and pegmatitic environments where beryllium is present. It develops in large crystals in these environments due to the slow cooling and crystallization processes that occur in pegmatites. The presence of iron during formation imparts the characteristic yellow or golden color to the mineral.
