Moissanite

 Moissanite is an extremely rare mineral, composed of silicon carbide. Found only in some meteorites and kimberlites (upper mantle rock), natural Moissanite is extremely rare. Moissanite was discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan while examining rock samples from a meteor crater in Canyon Diablo, Arizona. He first mistakenly identified the crystals as diamonds, but in 1904 he determined the crystals were silicon carbide. It was named in 1905 in his honor.

Moissanites are often used as an alternative to Diamonds for engagement and wedding rings because of their incredible brilliance. Moissanite is more brilliant than a diamond! In gemology, brilliance means a stone’s ability to reflect white light and is a good indicator for how much a gemstone will sparkle. Moissanite’s brilliance is higher than Diamond’s due to its higher refractive index (Diamond is 2.42 and Moissanite is 2.65).

Moissanite is usually made in laboratories under high pressure and temperatures because it's almost never found large enough pieces to cut faceted gemstones. Lab-created Moissanites sell for a fraction of the price of a lab-created Diamond, making them a great alternative! Lab-grown gemstones look identical to their natural counterparts. They have the same physical and chemical properties as natural, the only difference is that they are grown in a lab, while natural stones are formed in the earth over millions of years inside the Earth's crust.
