Scolecite

Scolecite is a mineral in the zeolite group, and is closely related to Natrolite and Mesolite. It is a calcium aluminosilicate mineral with the chemical formula CaAl2Si3O10·3H2O. Scolecite forms in volcanic bubbles called vesicles along with other zeolites. Sometimes chemical analysis is needed to determine if a specimen is Natrolite or Scolecite; even a single crystal may contain part of each mineral within different zones of the same crystal. The mineral is known for its fibrous crystal structure, and when viewed under magnification, the crystals often resemble delicate hair-like filaments, which is one of the key features that makes scolecite so distinctive. Scolecite is also known for its ability to form in radiating patterns or wavy clusters, which adds to its visual allure.

Scolecite is named after the Greek word “skolec” meaning "worm" after its worm-like reaction to a blowpipe flame. It has an acicular habit, meaning it grows in long needle-like formations. The name was first used in 1813 by the German mineralogist August Breithaupt, who described the mineral after discovering it in Germany.
