Fire Agate
Fire Agate is a type of chalcedony containing inclusions of Goethite or Limonite, with an iridescent effect or "fire" known as the “Schiller effect”. Fire Agates are known for their beautiful colors and botryoidal growth habit. The botryoidal growths in Fire Agates were built from many extremely thin layers of agate, deposited on top of each other over time. Some layers of the agate were coated with tiny particles of goethite, which give it the “fire” effect. This effect mimics the color play in opals but is completely different.
Fire Agates are found in Arizona, California, New Mexico in the United States and Mexico in the states of Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, and San Luis Potosi. Fire Agates formed during volcanic activity around 24-36 million years ago.
