Citrine
Citrine is modern birthstone for November and 13th anniversary stone. Citrine is the yellow variety of Quartz. Quartz is a mineral composed of silicon and oxygen, with a chemical composition of SiO2. All other varieties of Quartz, such as purple Amethyst, green Praisolite, or pink Rose Quartz are colored due to tiny inclusions in the silica. Citrine typically contains trace amounts of iron, which is responsible for its yellow color. Before the days of modern gem testing, Citrine was often confused with Topaz. The name Citrine is derived from the French word “citron” meaning “lemon”.
The most significant deposits of Citrine are in Brazil, Madagascar, and Zambia. Natural Citrine is very rare. Today most Citrine on the market is Amethyst or Smokey Quartz that have been heated to turn it yellow to appear as Citrine. For this reason, we are very careful when sourcing Citrine and stick with our trusted dealers.
