Blue Lace Agate
Blue Lace Agate is a rare, pale blue banded variety of Agate (Chalcedony). Blue Lace Agate was first discovered in the 1970s Namibia, South Africa at the Ysterputz Farm (Ysterputs Farm) which is no longer in operation and is under ownership dispute. Today, most Blue Lace Agate is originating from Namibia and Malawi, South Africa. Smaller amounts of Blue Lace Agate have been found in Brazil, China, India and various places in the United States.
Agates are a translucent variety of microcrystalline quartz. Agate typically forms by the deposition of silica from groundwater in the cavities of igneous rocks. Agates form in concentric layers around the walls of the cavity, or in horizontal layers building up from the bottom. This produces the banded patterns that are found on many agates. Some of these cavities are lined with crystals which is called a geode.
