Alexandrite

Alexandrite is the modern June birthstone and stone for the 55th wedding anniversary. It's one of the world's most expensive & most rare gemstones with top-grade gems selling for $12,000 per carat. Alexandrite is a type of Chrysoberyl with a breathtaking, natural color-changing ability. It's composed primarily of beryllium, aluminum, and oxygen. Alexandrite's striking chameleon-like color shift is caused by its rare chemical composition, which includes traces of chromium, the same chemical element in Emerald. It has been lovingly coined by gemstone lovers as “Emerald by day, Ruby by night." It was first discovered in the Ural mountains of Russia in the 1830's and was named after Russian Czar Alexander II. Today, it is also found in Sri Lanka, east Africa and Brazil.  Alexandrite is also manufactured in labs using corundum and infused with chromium or vanadium for color. The process to create laboratory-grown gems is expensive, which is reflected in their price, however, still less expensive than natural gemstones.
