Howlite was first discovered in 1868 by Henry How, a Canadian geologist, mineralogist, and chemist, who is also its namesake. Howlite was initially identified in Nova Scotia, Canada, and How's detailed study of the mineral led to its formal recognition and naming in his honor.

Howlite forms in evaporite deposits where it crystallizes in nodules, masses, or occasionally as small prismatic crystals.
