Blue Zircon
Blue Zircon is a rare variety of the mineral Zircon, composed of zirconium silicate. Zircon is known for its brilliance, high refractive index, strong dispersion, and excellent durability, making it a popular gemstone! The blue variety of Zircon is particularly prized for its vibrant color, which can range from pale to deep blue.
Blue Zircon is very rare, expensive and only found in specific localities, including Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Madagascar and Austrailia. Most Blue Zircon available in the market is the result of heat treatment. Colorless or brown Zircons are heated to temperatures between 800 and 1,000 degrees Celsius in a reducing environment, which changes the oxidation state of trace elements (such as uranium, thorium, or rare earth elements) within the crystal, producing the blue color. This process can occur naturally in the Earth’s crust but is often replicated in controlled conditions by gemstone processors.
Zircon is the oldest mineral on Earth, formed over 4 billion years ago! Although Zircon is a natural gemstone, it's sometimes confused with synthetic cubic zirconia. The name "Zircon" is derived from the Arabic word "Zarqūn" and the Persian word "Zargun" meaning "gold-colored." These terms originally referred to the mineral's golden-yellow varieties. Over time, the term evolved to refer to the mineral in general, encompassing all color varieties, including the prized Blue Zircon.
Zircon is a mineral found in igneous rocks, particularly granites and syenites. Zircon forms as a primary mineral during the crystallization of magma. As the magma cools, zirconium, silicon, and oxygen combine to form zircon crystals. These crystals can remain stable over geological time, resisting weathering and erosion. Zircon can also form during the metamorphism of pre-existing igneous rocks. The high temperatures and pressures involved in metamorphism can cause Zircon crystals to recrystallize, sometimes altering their color.
The earliest historical records of Zircon date back to ancient Persia (modern-day Iran), where it was highly prized for its beauty and magical properties. Persian scholars and alchemists recognized Zircon's unique optical properties, including its exceptional brilliance and color variation. It was often associated with the planet Jupiter and believed to bring wisdom and prosperity to its wearer. In ancient India, Zircon was regarded as a sacred stone. It was believed to have divine properties and was used in various religious and spiritual practices. The stone's luminous quality was thought to symbolize purity and spiritual enlightenment, making it a favored gem for rituals and offerings.
During the Middle Ages, Zircon was used to promote deep sleep and ward off evil spirits. In the Hindu religion, Zircon can be alternated with Hessonite Garnet as one of the nine Gems of the Navaratna. When worn together in talismans, the nine gems bring protection, wealth, wisdom and good health. This practice was later adapted by Muslims. The Gems of the Navaratna are Ruby (Sun), Emerald (Mercury), Diamond (Venus), Pearl (Moon), Coral (Mars), Yellow Sapphire (Jupiter), Blue Sapphire (Saturn), Hessonite Garnet (Lunar Ascending Node), and Cats-Eye Chrysoberyl (Lunar Descending Node). When the gems are set in a circular pattern, the Ruby (Sun) is traditionally in the center, as it represents the center of the solar system.
