Saffordite is a pseudo-tektite named after the town of Safford, Arizona, where it was first discovered. Pseudo-tektites are natural glasses that resemble tektites but are formed by volcanic or other terrestrial processes rather than impact events. They can include obsidian, which forms from the rapid cooling of lava, or other glasses that form from volcanic eruptions.

Saffordite is also called the holy grail stone, wish-fulfilling stone, or "Cintamani" which means “wishing stone.” The name "Cintamani" (or Chintamani) is derived from Sanskrit, where "cinta" means thought and "mani" means jewel or gemstone. In Buddhist and Hindu mythology, Cintamani is often referred to as the "wish-fulfilling jewel" or the "jewel that grants all desires." Cintamani is said to have originated from the celestial realms or as a gift from divine beings. It is not formed through natural geological processes like minerals but is believed to possess extraordinary spiritual and healing properties.
