Hauyne is a member of the sodalite group of feldspathoid minerals. It has a varying chemical structure where sodium and calcium can substitute for each other, and sulfur can replace some oxygen atoms. Hauyne is named after the French crystallographer René Just Haüy (1743-1822), who is considered one of the founders of modern crystallography. Haüy’s work in the early 19th century laid the groundwork for the study of crystal structures and their properties. Hauyne is found in several notable localities around the world including Italy, Germany, Russia, and the United States.

Hauyne forms in silica-poor igneous rocks, particularly in nepheline syenites, phonolites, and tephrites. It is typically associated with other feldspathoid minerals like nepheline and leucite. The mineral crystallizes from magma that is low in silica but rich in sodium, calcium, and sulfur. Its formation is influenced by the presence of volcanic gases, which can introduce sulfur into the crystallizing environment, allowing for the formation of the distinctive blue crystals.
