Laguna Agate

 Laguna Agates are one of the most highly sought after Agates in the world, known for their beautiful bright colors and tight bands! They are found in a remote mountainous area in Chihuahua, Mexico, about 150 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border. Laguna Agates were discovered in the late 1940's and have been found in several sites on the upper portion of Mountain Hollow. They are believed to be about 38 million years old and may contain sagenites (moss like inclusions and/or tubes). Laguna Agates are a banded chalcedony, which is a variety of Quartz.

Agates are a translucent variety of microcrystalline quartz. Agate typically forms by the deposition of silica from groundwater in the cavities of igneous rocks. Agates form in concentric layers around the walls of the cavity, or in horizontal layers building up from the bottom. This produces the banded patterns that are found on many agates. Some of these cavities are lined with crystals which is called a geode.
