Its milky and opalescent appearance is due to microscopic air and water bubbles trapped within the Quartz. This optical phenomena is known as the girasol effect, caused by light scattering off microscopic inclusions inside. It appears like the stone is almost glowing from within in hues of blue, yellow, pink, purple or white. The word "girasol" is derived from the Italian world "girasole" meaning "turn towards the Sun".
