Bastnasite

Bastnasite is a very rare, collector's gem and is one of few rare Earth element carbonate minerals. Gem grade material is found in very small quantities. It has a varying chemical compassion, most commonly with inclusions of Cerium and some specimens may be mildly radioactive. Bastnasite crystals are piezoelectric, meaning they have the ability to generate a voltage in response to applied mechanical stress such as an external pressure. It was first described in 1838 by the Swedish chemist Wilhelm Hisinger. It is named for the Bastnäs mine near Riddarhyttan, Västmanland, Sweden. Bastnasite is found in Madagascar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Canada, Tanzania, Zambia and the USA.
