Strawberry Quartz is the trade name for a variety of Quartz (SiO2) with a striking red sparkle due to the presence of mineral inclusions of Hematite or Goethite. These inclusions can range from fine specks to more prominent, visible streaks or "seeds" embedded within the crystal. Strawberry Quartz was originally known as "Scarlet Quartz" and used in the late nineteenth century to describe thin red Hematite included Quartz from the iron mines of Cumbria, England.

Genuine Strawberry Quartz refers to crystals that have a significant and authentic presence of Hematite or Goethite inclusions, giving them their characteristic hue. While some stones on the market may be marketed as Strawberry Quartz, they may lack these key inclusions or are artificially enhanced with dye. As a result, natural, untreated Strawberry Quartz from regions like Kazakhstan and Mexico is considered valuable and rare. The rarity is further compounded by the specific geological conditions required for the formation of these inclusions, making it a sought-after gemstone for both collectors and energy healers.

Like other types of quartz, Strawberry Quartz forms when silica-rich fluids slowly crystallize in hydrothermal veins —pockets of hot water rich in dissolved minerals deep within the Earth’s crust. Over time, as the fluid cools, the silica solidifies into quartz crystals. During this process, iron oxide (Hematite) can be trapped inside the quartz, creating the beautiful red inclusions that give Strawberry Quartz its characteristic color and appearance.

While Strawberry Quartz is found in a few parts of the world, the two most notable sources are Kazakhstan and Mexico. Kazakhstan is home to some of the most renowned deposits of high-quality Strawberry Quartz. The deposits are primarily located in the Altai Mountains and Karakol Valley, where the stone is mined from hydrothermal veins rich in Hematite and other minerals. Kazakhstani Strawberry Quartz is particularly prized for its clarity and the intensity of its red or pink inclusions, often creating striking, translucent specimens that are ideal for fine jewelry. Mexico is another important locality for Strawberry Quartz, particularly in the states of Sonora and Chihuahua. While Mexican Strawberry Quartz is typically less transparent than its Kazakhstani counterpart, it is equally valued for its deep red color and pronounced Hematite inclusions.
