Natrolite is a tectosilicate mineral species belonging to the zeolite group. It is a hydrated sodium and aluminium silicate. Natrolite was named in 1803 by Martin H. Klaproth from the Greek word natron, meaning "soda" (due to its sodium content) and lithos meaning "stone." Natrolite is sometimes referred to as needle stone because of its acicular crystal habit (fragile, slender, needle-like crystals). Some Natrolite specimens fluoresce orange to yellow under ultraviolet light. Natrolite is found in cavities or fissures in basaltic rocks, volcanic ash deposits, and veins in granite, gneiss, and other rocks. Natrolite is found all over the globe with notable deposits in Russia, India, Indonesia, the United States and Canada.

Natrolite crystals are powerful energy conductors because they are pyroelectric and piezoelectric. The word piezoelectricity means electricity resulting from pressure and latent heat. Pyroelectricity means the ability of certain materials to generate a temporary voltage when they are heated or cooled.

In early 2020, on the island of Nusa Kambangan, Central Java, Indonesia, a new variety of Natrolite was discovered. It has a beautiful Larimar-like appearance when polished but is a beautiful salmon-pink color due to trace amounts of iron. This variety of Natrolite is highly collectible due to its beautiful appearance and healing properties.

Care: Natrolite is fragile and porous. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat (or extreme heat), direct sunlight and contact with abrasive surfaces or chemicals. Remove before contact sports, weight lifting or activities where it may come into contact with force. As always, it should be stored away from minerals higher on the MOHs scale.
