Chrysocolla is a silicate mineral formed as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of copper ore deposits. Chrysocolla is typically found as glassy botryoidal, rounded masses or bubbly crusts, and as vein fillings. It is often found with other secondary Copper minerals, such as Malachite, Azurite, and Cuprite. Chrysocolla is named after the Greek words “Chrysos” meaning gold and “Kolla” meaning glue, originating from its historical use as a flux in soldering gold. The presence of Copper gives Chrysocolla its characteristic blue and green colors and other elements like iron, manganese, and calcium, can also be present causing variations in color and composition.
