Sonora Sunset is the trade name given to this beautiful naturally occurring rock made of Chrysocolla and Curpite, originating from Sonora, Mexico. Its known for its mesmerizing hues of red, orange, turquoise, and green, Sonora Sunset is a copper-based mineral that features a unique combination of two stunning minerals, resulting in a vibrant and rare gem that’s highly sought after by collectors and crystal healers. Sonora Sunset is also known as Sonoran Sunset, Sonoran Sunrise. Chrysocolla is a silicate mineral formed as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of copper ore deposits. Cuprite is an oxide mineral composed of copper oxide. Tiny amounts of black iron or iron oxide minerals are present in some Sonora Sunrise and Chalcotrichite, an orange variety of Cuprite.

Chrysocolla is a copper silicate mineral, that typically forms in oxidized copper deposits and is known for its striking turquoise blue to green hues. It is a relatively soft mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 7, and it often occurs as a botryoidal (rounded) or fibrous formation. Cuprite is a copper oxide mineral, with a deep, rich red to brownish-red color, making it a significant contributor to the red and orange hues in Sonora Sunset. Cuprite is known for its high copper content and its deep crimson color, often forming as well-formed cubic or octahedral crystals.

The primary locality for Sonora Sunset is the Sonora region of northern Mexico, particularly near the Cananea mining district in the state of Sonora. This region is known for its copper-rich deposits and has produced a wide variety of copper-based minerals, including Malachite, Azurite, Chrysocolla, and Cuprite. Sonora Sunset is usually found in the oxidized zones of these copper deposits, where the weathering process and hydrothermal fluids create the ideal conditions for the formation of Chrysocolla and Cuprite. The gemstone is most often found as botryoidal clusters or cavities inside limestone or copper ore deposits. While Sonora Sunset is rare, it can occasionally be found in other parts of the world with similar copper deposits, but the Sonora region in Mexico is by far the most well-known and productive locality.
