Dumortierite belongs to the silicate group of minerals and often forms elongated, fibrous crystals. Its composed of aluminum, boron, silicon, and oxygen. Dumortierite's distinctive blue color is attributed to the presence of iron and titanium in its structure. Its unique sparkling and fibrous structure gives dumortierite a silky luster, making it a popular choice for lapidary work.
Dumortierite is named after French paleontologist, M. Eugene Dumortier and was discovered in 1881 by F. Gonnard in Chaponost, France. It forms in aluminous metamorphic rocks; in pegmatites and in found in the USA, France, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Madagascar, Canada, Namibia and Russia.
