Kunzite is lithium aluminum silicate mineral and the most well-known variety of the mineral Spodumene. Spodumene is a pyroxene mineral typically found in lithium-rich pegmatites. It commonly forms with other lithium minerals such as Lepidolite, Eucryptite, and Petalite. Kunzite gets its beautiful pastel color from trace amounts of manganese. Kunzite was first discovered in Connecticut, USA, and named after George Frederick Kunz, an American mineralogist and former Vice President and buyer for Tiffany & Company who first described the gem Kunzite in 1902. Primary sources of Kunzite are Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Madagascar, Myanmar and the USA. Kunzite is highly sought after in jewelry because of its pleochroism (meaning it displays a different color when viewed from different angles).

Kunzite forms in pegmatitic veins, which are typically found in granite or schist formations. These veins are the result of the cooling and crystallization of magma that contains trace elements such as lithium, which are crucial in the formation of Kunzite. During the cooling process, large crystals are able to form, and as they do, the presence of manganese within the crystal structure gives Kunzite its characteristic pink to violet color. The formation of Kunzite requires specific conditions, including the right levels of manganese and lithium, which make this gemstone both rare and precious. Kunzite crystals can grow up to several feet in length, with some of the largest and most vibrant specimens coming from mines in Brazil and Afghanistan.

Care: Kunzite is prone to color fading when left in the sun. Do not use jewelry cleaner, use a silver polishing cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat (or extreme heat), direct sunlight and contact with abrasive surfaces or chemicals. Remove before contact sports, weight lifting or activities where it may come into contact with force. As always, it should be stored away from minerals higher on the MOHs scale.
