The name Mookaite Jasper comes from the Mooka Creek in Western Australia, where this particular type of Jasper was first discovered. The word "jasper" itself is derived from the Greek word "iaspis," which means "spotted stone." This term is fitting, as Mookaite often has mottled or banded patterns that resemble spots or waves of color. The term “Mookaite” is used specifically to describe the variety of Jasper found in the Mooka Creek region.

Flint and Chert are also names for opaque microcrystalline quartz but these have muted or neutral colors.
