Moon Quartz, also known as "Milky Quartz" or "Girasol Quartz", are trade names for a milky and translucent variety of Quartz. Its milky and opalescent appearance is due to microscopic air and water bubbles trapped within the Quartz. This optical phenomena is known as the girasol effect, caused by light scattering off microscopic inclusions inside. It appears like the stone is almost glowing from within in hues of blue, yellow, pink, purple or white. The word "girasol" is derived from the Italian world "girasole" meaning "turn towards the Sun". It originated in Venice during the Renaissance to describe a milky blue glass. Moon Quartz can also be treated where a natural Clear Quartz or Amethyst is heated to produce this opalescent effect.
