Clear Quartz, also known as “Rock Crystal”, is pure silicon dioxide. Clear Quartz is named from the Greek word “krystallos”, meaning “ice”. Quartz is a mineral composed of silicon and oxygen, with a chemical composition of SiO₂. All other varieties of Quartz, such as purple Amethyst, yellow Citrine, green Praisolite, or pink Rose Quartz are colored due to tiny inclusions in the silica. Quartz is the most abundant mineral on Earth and found all over it! Most of the sand in the world's beaches is actually the mineral Quartz. Quartz is resistant to weathering so as some rocks weather away, Quartz will remain. It forms at all temperatures and is abundant in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.

Quartz is used in electronics to convert mechanical energy into a form of electricity called piezoelectricity. Piezoelectricity was discovered in 1880 by the Curie brothers, Pierre and Jacques using crystals of tourmaline, quartz, cane sugar and Rochelle salt. Piezoelectricity is used in many things such as acoustic instruments, igniters for most gas furnaces and stoves, radio transmitters, piezoelectric motors, laser electronic and diesel engines to name a few.

Quartz is known by its incredible ability to vibrate at precise frequencies. Because of its precision, Quartz crystals are used for time-keeping instruments and other equipment that can transmit radio and television signals. You may own or have seen a watch with the word Quartz, which indicates that it uses a small piece of quartz paired with an oscillator to vibrate the crystal and the crystal will keep the time.

Ancient Sumerians used Quartz in their rituals and for protection. Crystals have been used in traditional Chinese medicine dating back to over 5,000 years ago.
