Rainbow Pyrite is a stunning and rare, natural variety of Pyrite, also known as Iridescent Pyrite or Peacock Pyrite. It's composed of iron disulfide. The iridescent effect is created by thin layers of iron oxides or other secondary minerals forming on the surface of the pyrite crystals. Rainbow Pyrite is only found in Russia.

Pyrite, also known as "Fool's Gold", is composed of iron sulfide and is the most common sulfide mineral. The name "Pyrite" is after the Greek word "pyrites lithos" meaning "the stone which strikes fire" because it emits sparks when struck by metal or a hard surface. Pyrite crystals are piezoelectric, meaning that they can generate a small electric charge when pressure is applied. It also has another special property, called pyroelectricity, that occurs when a crystal becomes electrically charged when heated or cooled.

Pyrite crystals are often striated and may form cubic, octahedral, or twelve-sided “pyritohedra” shaped crystals. It often forms in hydrothermal veins and coal deposits. Pyrite can be found in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks all over the globe.
