Scolecite is a mineral in the zeolite group, and is closely related to Natrolite and Mesolite. It forms in volcanic bubbles called vesicles along with other zeolites. Sometimes chemical analysis is needed to determine if a specimen is Natrolite or Scolecite; even a single crystal may contain part of each mineral within different zones of the same crystal.  Scolecite is named after the Greek word “skolec” meaning "worm" after its worm-like reaction to a blowpipe flame. It has an acicular habit, meaning it grows in long needle-like formations.

Scolecite crystals are powerful energy conductors because they are pyroelectric and piezoelectric. The word piezoelectricity means electricity resulting from pressure and latent heat. Pyroelectricity means the ability of certain materials to generate a temporary voltage when they are heated or cooled.

Care: Avoid prolonged exposure to heat (or extreme heat), direct sunlight and contact with water, abrasive surfaces or chemicals. Remove before contact sports, weight lifting or activities where it may come into contact with force. As always, minerals higher on the hardness scale should be stored away from it.

Cleaning: Warm water, mild soap, and soft brush.
