Selenite is a crystallized mineral in the gypsum group. It's composed of hydrous calcium sulfate which means it contains calcium, sulfur, oxygen, and water molecules. Selenite, satin spar, desert rose, and gypsum flower are various crystal habit varieties of the mineral gypsum. Selenite is named after the Ancient Greek word for the moon and in honor of the Greek goddess of the moon, Selene. Its crystals often exhibit a pearly luster and have a unique fibrous or columnar structure. The arrangement of ions and water molecules gives Selenite its characteristic fibrous or columnar crystal habit. Selenite is typically found in evaporite deposits, where it forms through the evaporation of ancient saltwater bodies. It's found in various locations across the globe, including Mexico, Morocco, Brazil, the United States, and Poland. Selenite crystals in the Naica Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico are the largest natural crystals ever found. They can grow up to 36 feet long and weigh up to 55 tons. Naica's Cave of the Crystals is an enchanting place found 984 feet below the earth's surface.
