Sinhalite is a rare and intriguing mineral in the borate group, chemically composed of magnesium aluminate borate with the formula (MgAlB3O12). It was first discovered in Sri Lanka in 1952 and was named from the Sanskrit name for Sri Lanka, “Sinhala” which means “Lion Island”. Despite its relatively recent recognition as a gem-quality mineral, Sinhalite has quickly garnered attention due to its unusual chemistry, striking colors, and relatively few known localities where it is found. High quality Sinhalite is typically cut into faceted stones, which helps to showcase its brilliance and clarity. Sinhalite is generally transparent to translucent, with a glass-like luster when well-polished. 

Sinhalite is found only in a few localities around the world, with the most significant and well-known source being Sri Lanka. Other deposits of Sinhalite have been discovered in Myanmar and Tanzania, but these are far less abundant. The rarity of Sinhalite makes it a collector’s gem, with high-quality stones often being difficult to find on the market. When Sinhalite crystals form in nature, most Sinhalite occurrences are not of gem-quality; many of the crystals are too small, flawed, or opaque to be cut into faceted gemstones. As a result, only a limited number of Sinhalite stones are available for use in jewelry.

Sinhalite forms in metamorphic rocks, specifically within regions that have experienced significant heat and pressure over millions of years. Like many other borate minerals, Sinhalite is known to form in metamorphic environments where boron, magnesium, and aluminum-rich materials are subject to the right chemical and physical conditions. This includes the presence of water, heat, and pressure, which causes the elements to crystallize and form Sinhalite.
