Its usually found as an inclusion in Quartz and is often associated with other phosphate minerals like Augelite, Apatite, Lazulite, Montebrasite and Scorzalite. Dark blue Trolleite is typically colored by inclusions of Lazulite. This rare mineral is found in only found in a few localities in Sweden, Russia, Austria, and Brazil.

Trolleite was named after Johan August Trolle, a Swedish mineralogist from the 19th century.
