Mali Garnet is a variety of Garnet that belongs to the andradite and pyrope Garnet groups. Its a solid solution between these two mineral species, which gives it its striking appearance and unique color characteristics. The mineral is often referred to as a "green Garnet" or "yellow-green Garnet" due to the distinctive colors it displays, but it can also be found in shades ranging from orange to brown. What makes Mali Garnet particularly captivating is its brilliant sparkle and high refractive index, which gives it a diamond-like brilliance.

Mali Garnet is extremely rare and is considered one of the more valuable garnet varieties. It was first discovered in Mali, West Africa, which is why it carries the name "Mali Garnet." The main source of Mali Garnet is located in the region of Nioro du Sahel, a remote area in Mali, where small-scale mining operations have been extracting this gem since its discovery in the late 1990s. Mali Garnets contribute to the local economy in Mali, providing jobs and income for miners and communities in the region.

Despite its beautiful and unique qualities, the primary locality of Mali Garnet has been largely limited to this region, which contributes to its rarity and value. The mines in Mali have produced a limited supply of these gems, and as demand increases, their availability has decreased. This scarcity has made Mali Garnet a highly sought-after stone for jewelers, collectors, and investors.

Like all Garnets, Mali Garnet forms in metamorphic rocks, which are rocks that have been subjected to heat and pressure over long periods. Garnets, including Mali Garnet, typically form in regions of the Earth’s crust where high temperatures and pressure create the perfect conditions for the minerals to crystallize.

Mali Garnet specifically forms in contact metamorphic environments, where rocks like limestone and shale are heated by the intrusion of magma. In these conditions, the elements needed to form Garnet, like iron, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum, are abundant and mix to create the distinctive yellow-green to orange hues of Mali Garnet. Over time, these minerals crystallize and form the brilliant, gem-quality stones that are later mined and polished for use in jewelry.
