Covellite is a rare copper sulfide mineral with the chemical formula CuS. This mineral is primarily composed of copper and sulfur, but its beauty lies in its distinctive blue to violet-blue coloration, which can vary depending on its exposure to light and oxidation. When freshly mined, Covellite can have a metallic, almost black sheen, but as it weathers, it transforms into the brilliant blue hues that make it so unique. Although Covellite is rare, it can be found in a variety of locations around the world with notable localities in Montana & Arizona in the USA, Italy and Australia. The name Covellite comes from the locality where it was first described, Covel, a small area in California, USA. The mineral was first identified by the British mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner in the late 18th century. The mineral was later named in honor of the place of discovery, though other sources suggest that the name could also be derived from the Latin word copper, “cuprum,” due to the mineral's copper content.

Covellite typically forms through the alteration of other copper minerals in hydrothermal environments, especially where conditions involve low temperatures and the presence of sulfur. It can also occur as a result of the oxidation of copper ore deposits. This process often takes place in veins or at the surface of copper-rich minerals, where covellite precipitates as a secondary mineral, taking on its characteristic blue color. The mineral’s formation is part of a larger geochemical process. Covellite can crystallize from the solutions that form when sulfurous gases mix with copper-bearing fluids, leading to the precipitation of copper sulfide minerals. This transformation is often observed in environments where copper-rich rocks and sulfur are present in abundance.
