Alexandrite is a type of Chrysoberyl with a breathtaking, natural color-changing ability. It's composed primarily of beryllium, aluminum, and oxygen. Alexandrite's striking chameleon-like color shift is caused by its rare chemical composition, which includes traces of chromium, the same chemical element in Emerald. It has been lovingly coined by gemstone lovers as “Emerald by day, Ruby by night." It was first discovered in the Ural mountains of Russia in the 1830's and was named after Russian Czar Alexander II.
