Cats Eye Alexandrite is a rare variety of chrysoberyl composed of beryllium aluminum oxide. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically forms as short prismatic crystals, although gem quality material is most often recovered from secondary alluvial deposits as worn pebbles. Its hardness measures 8.5 on the Mohs scale, and it displays a vitreous luster with transparency ranging from translucent to transparent. In properly cut cabochons, the surface reveals a distinct band of reflected light known as chatoyancy.

The color change in Cats Eye Alexandrite results from trace amounts of chromium substituting for aluminum within the crystal lattice. Chromium selectively absorbs portions of the visible spectrum, producing green to bluish green hues in daylight and red to purplish red tones under incandescent light. The cat’s eye effect occurs when dense, parallel needle like inclusions reflect light in a concentrated line across the dome of the stone. When oriented correctly during cutting, this reflective band appears sharp and centered, moving fluidly across the surface as the gem is rotated.

Cats Eye Alexandrite forms in rare environments where beryllium rich pegmatitic or metamorphic conditions intersect with chromium bearing host rocks. The coexistence of these elements is uncommon, contributing directly to its scarcity. Historically significant deposits were discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia and are now largely depleted. Additional sources include Brazil, Sri Lanka, and parts of East Africa, though fine specimens that exhibit strong color change combined with pronounced chatoyancy remain exceptionally rare within the global gem trade.

The name Alexandrite was given in honor of the future Tsar Alexander the Second of Russia following its discovery in 1834 in the Ural Mountains. Its green and red color shift reflected the imperial military colors of Russia, increasing its prominence within the Russian court. It was formally identified as a chromium bearing variety of chrysoberyl during nineteenth century mineralogical classification and has since occupied a distinct position in gemological study due to its optical complexity.
