Hackmanite, also known as “chameleon crystal”, is a rare and beautiful sulfur-rich variety of sodalite. It's composed of sodium aluminum silicate chloride. Hackmanite displays a unique phenomenon known as tenebrescence. Tenebrescence is the ability of certain minerals to temporarily change color when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light then will gradually return to their original color when placed in darkness or exposed to visible light. Hackmanite is a pale to deep violet when it's mined, but quickly fades to a gray or greenish white color when left exposed to sunlight. The color change process can be repeated indefinitely but will lose its ability to change color if exposed to extreme heat.The elements behind the glow of Hackmanite are sulfur, potassium, titanium and iron. Hackmanite was discovered in Greenland in the early 20th century and is named after the Finnish geologist Victor Axel Hackman. It is also found in Afghanistan, Canada, Russia, and Burma.
