Phenakite was discovered during the early 19th century, in emerald mines in the Ural Mountains of Southern Russia. Phenakite is named after the Greek word “phenax” meaning “deceiver” because of its close visual appearance to Quartz. It forms in high-temperature pegmatite veins and mica-schists, often with Quartz, Chrysoberyl, Apatite and Topaz. Phenakite is found across the globe with gem grade sources in Russia, Austria, Brazil, Czech Republic and the USA.
