Pyrite, also known as "Fool's Gold", is composed of iron sulfide and is the most common sulfide mineral. The name "Pyrite" is after the Greek word "pyrites lithos" meaning "the stone which strikes fire" because it emits sparks when struck by metal or a hard surface. Pyrite crystals are piezoelectric, meaning that they can generate a small electric charge when pressure is applied. It also has another special property, called pyroelectricity, that occurs when a crystal becomes electrically charged when heated or cooled. 

Pyrite's nickname originated after fooling novice prospectors. Pyrite's gold color, metallic luster, and high specific gravity often cause it to be mistaken for Gold by the untrained eye. Gold and Pyrite minerals often form together and sometimes Pyrite will contain inclusions of Gold. Pyrite crystals are often striated and may form cubic, octahedral, or twelve-sided “pyritohedra” shaped crystals. It often forms in hydrothermal veins and coal deposits. Pyrite can be found in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks all over the globe.

In Ancient Greece, Pyrite believed was believed to have magical properties that brought good luck and protection. Mosaic Pyrite mirrors were used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica by the Mayans, Aztec, Olmec and Purépecha. Native American tribes used Pyrite for various spiritual and healing purposes. Pyrite was used in the 16th and 17th centuries as a source of ignition in early firearms. In the early 20th century, Pyrite was used in radio receivers.
