Howlite is a borate mineral commonly known for its striking white appearance with gray or black veining. It is often used as an imitation for more valuable stones like Turquoise because it can be dyed to resemble them. Howlite was first discovered in 1868 by Henry How, a Canadian geologist, mineralogist, and chemist, who is also its namesake. Howlite was initially identified in Nova Scotia, Canada, and How's detailed study of the mineral led to its formal recognition and naming in his honor.

Howlite forms in evaporite deposits where it crystallizes in nodules, masses, or occasionally as small prismatic crystals. These environments are typically rich in boron, allowing the mineral to precipitate out of the evaporating waters. Howlite can form through hydrothermal processes where boron-rich fluids infiltrate limestone deposits. Howlite is found in several locations worldwide, with notable deposits in the United States, Canada and Turkey.
