Lapis Lazuli is the traditional birthstone for December. Lapis Lazuli is an uncommon rock composed of several minerals including Lazurite, Haüyne, Sodalite, and Nosean (all members of the sodalite group). Lapis Lazuli commonly has inclusions of Pyrite and/or Calcite (Calcite tends to lower the value; can appear as a streak or make the overall color lighter). Lapis Lazuli was named after the latin word “Lapis” meaning stone and the Persian word “Lazhward”, meaning blue. Lapis Lazuli's primary source is Afghanistan with other notable deposits in Chile, Russia, Canada, Argentina, and Pakistan. It has also been found in smaller amounts in the United States.

Historians have dated our love for Lapis Lazuli stone back to 6,000 BC. Lapis Lazuli was treasured by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome. Beads, jewelry, and carvings have been found at ancient sites dating back to 6,000 years ago. It was prized for its incredible bright-blue color, and treasured among other special blue gems like Sapphire and Turquoise. Ancient Egyptians was used Lapis Lazuli in many ornamental objects and jewelry. Powdered Lapis Lazuli was used as a cosmetic and a pigment known as “ultramarine blue”. Cleopatra wore ground Lapis as eye makeup believing it to promote psychic abilities and visions. In Ancient Egypt, Lapis Lazuli was believed lead the soul into immortality and open the heart to love. During the Renaissance period and into the 1800s, paintings done with ultramarine blue were considered to be a luxury due to their high cost like “The Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh.

Today, we believe some historical references to Sapphire may indeed be referring to Lapis Lazuli. Lapis Lazuli has been carved into exquisite and intricate carvings throughout the years like scarabs, board games, ornamental objects, bowls, daggers, amulets and cabochons for jewelry.
