Oregon Sunstone is a radiant variety of feldspar known for its shimmering aventurescence, a glittering effect caused by tiny copper platelets within the crystal structure. This natural optical phenomenon gives the stone its signature glow, ranging in color from pale champagne to deep scarlet, peach, and even green or bi-color hues. It is a true treasure of the Pacific Northwest, found exclusively in the high desert of southeastern Oregon, making it not only rare but deeply rooted in the sacred land from which it is born.

Unlike most Sunstones (which are typically feldspar with hematite or goethite), Oregon Sunstone contains native copper inclusions, which set it apart from similar stones found around the world. The density, size, and distribution of these inclusions directly affect the stone’s color and optical properties. Red and pink tones come from a higher concentration of copper. Green tones appear when light interacts with copper inclusions in a specific oxidation state or arrangement. Bicolor stones can form when different oxidation conditions or copper concentrations occur in separate areas of the crystal during growth.

While other varieties of Sunstone can be found in places like Norway, India, and Tanzania, only the Oregon variety possesses the copper sparkle and rich color saturation that collectors and healers desire. These Oregon Sunstones are so special that they have been designated the official state gemstone. Formed in ancient lava flows, these stones are born of fire, solidified from volcanic activity millions of years ago and preserved beneath the desert floor until unearthed. The Ponderosa and Plush mining regions are among the most famous localities, where this gem is still hand-dug today by artisans and crystal enthusiasts.

Historically, the stone was honored by Native American tribes who believed it contained the power of the sun. According to legend, a warrior wounded by an arrow bled upon the stone, imbuing it with sacred life force and color. This tale speaks to the spiritual reverence Oregon Sunstone inspires. To work with it, sit in sunlight and hold the stone to your solar plexus, heart, or third eye. Allow its coppery glow to flood your aura, calling in courage, creativity, and spiritual vitality. Oregon Sunstone shines best when used with intention, awakening your inner light and igniting the fire within.

Sunstone is named after its resemblence to our sun, and its alternative name, Heliolite. The Greek word “helios” means sun and “lithos” means stone.  It was first used in the 18th century and is believed to be inspired by the ancient belief that the sun was a god that bestowed light and life upon the Earth. In ancient cultures, Sunstone was thought to possess metaphysical properties, often associated with healing and joy.
