Pietersite is also known as “Tempest Stone” because of its stunning appearance that resembles a storm. Pietersite is a trade name for a brecciated, chatoyant variety of chalcedony composed primarily of microcrystalline quartz with embedded fibrous amphibole. The base material is silica, SiO₂, expressed as a dense aggregate of quartz microfibers typical of chalcedony. It commonly contains fragmented inclusions of crocidolite, the fibrous habit of riebeckite, which are enclosed and stabilized within the silica matrix. Pietersite follows the trigonal crystal system of quartz but does not occur as individual crystals. It is found exclusively as massive material and is cut and polished for ornamental use.

Pietersite displays a complex mosaic of blue gray, deep blue, brown, red brown, and golden yellow tones. These colors appear in irregular patches, streaks, and angular fragments rather than parallel bands. The surface luster ranges from vitreous to silky when polished. Its defining optical phenomenon is chatoyancy, produced when light reflects off closely spaced fibrous inclusions aligned within the chalcedony host. Because the fibrous material in pietersite has been broken, rotated, and recemented by geological processes, the reflective bands appear fragmented and multidirectional, creating a shifting effect as light moves across the surface rather than a single continuous band.

Geologically, Pietersite forms when fibrous amphibole material becomes incorporated into silica rich rock and later undergoes deformation and brecciation. Well documented sources include the Kuraman area near Outjo in Namibia and deposits in Henan Province, China. The limited geographic distribution, combined with restricted access to minable material, contributes to its relative scarcity in the gem and mineral market.

The name Pietersite honors Sid Pieters, a Namibian mineral dealer who first identified and described the material in 1962. The name entered formal records in Great Britain in 1964, and pietersite reached broader commercial awareness during the 1970s as lapidaries recognized its distinctive appearance. Scientific study has focused primarily on its microstructure, optical behavior, and relationship to other fibrous quartz based materials.

Chinese Pietersite was identified later, with discoveries associated with crocidolite bearing regions in Henan Province. Comparative studies have documented differences in texture and fiber arrangement between Namibian and Chinese material, though both are classified under the same trade name. Pietersite has no documented use in ancient cultures or historical lapidary traditions. Its identity is firmly modern, defined by twentieth century discovery, scientific examination, and contemporary gemstone use.
