Citrine is modern birthstone for November and 13th anniversary stone. Citrine is the yellow variety of Quartz. Quartz is a mineral composed of silicon and oxygen, with a chemical composition of SiO₂. All other varieties of Quartz, such as purple Amethyst, green Praisolite, or pink Rose Quartz are colored due to tiny inclusions in the silica. Citrine typically contains trace amounts of iron, which is responsible for its yellow color. Before the days of modern gem testing, Citrine was often confused with Topaz. The name Citrine is derived from the French word “citron” meaning “lemon”.

The most significant deposits of Citrine are in Brazil, Madagascar, and Zambia. Natural Citrine is very rare. Today most Citrine on the market is Amethyst or Smokey Quartz that have been heated to turn it yellow to appear as Citrine. Sunstone is an enchanting plagioclase feldspar mineral, primarily composed of sodium and calcium. Its most distinctive feature is its aventurescence, a phenomenon where light reflects off microscopic inclusions of mica, hematite, goethite, or copper within the stone, creating a shimmering effect reminiscent of sunlight glinting off water. This optical phenomenon is what sets Sunstone apart from other gemstones, making it highly sought after in jewelry and carvings.

Significant deposits of Sunstone are found in several places around the world, including India, Norway, Canada, and Russia, but some of the most coveted specimens come from Oregon, USA, where copper-bearing Sunstone displays vivid red, green, and even multicolored flashes. These Oregon Sunstones are so special that they have been designated the official state gemstone.

Sunstone is named after its resemblence to our sun, and its alternative name, Heliolite. The Greek word “helios” means sun and “lithos” means stone. It was first used in the 18th century and is believed to be inspired by the ancient belief that the sun was a god that bestowed light and life upon the Earth. In ancient cultures, Sunstone was thought to possess metaphysical properties, often associated with healing and joy.

Sunstone forms in igneous rocks through a process involving the crystallization of molten magma.
