Californite is a massive, translucent to opaque variety of Vesuvianite prized for its soft to vivid green. Its energy moves through the heart and solar plexus together so love and resolve travel as one. With it, decisions become clean and forward motion feels natural rather than forced.

Californite forms where heat transforms limestone and other rocks along contact zones, weaving silicate minerals into a tough, fine-grained mosaic. Vesuvianite itself was first described near Mount Vesuvius, which inspired its name. The green, jade-like material we call Californite became beloved in Northern California for carvings and cabochons, which is how the nickname “California Jade” took hold in the lapidary world. It is not a true jade, and it does not need to be. Californite has its own velvet glow and a grounded confidence that polishes beautifully. Idocrase also known as Vesuvianite, is a calcium aluminum silicate mineral. Its enchanting green color is often caused by traces of iron or chromium in the crystal structure. It was named in 1875 by Abraham Gottlob Werner after crystals were found near Mount Vesuvius, the famous volcano near Naples, Italy. The name Idocrase derived from two Greek words "eidos" and "krausis" that mean "mixed colors". Vesuvianite is often found with other minerals like Garnet, Diopside, Epidote and Calcite. Vesuvianite has notable deposits in Italy, Switzerland, Canada, the USA, Brazil, Mexico and Russia.
