Atlantisite is a rare mineral aggregate composed of green Serpentine intergrown with rich purple Stichtite, a combination found almost exclusively in Tasmania, Australia. Rather than being a single mineral species, Atlantisite forms as a naturally bonded matrix where these two minerals grow together within Serpentinite host rock. Serpentine is a hydrated magnesium silicate mineral group that forms through a process known as serpentinization, where ultramafic rocks rich in olivine and pyroxene are altered by heat, pressure, and water deep within the Earth. This transformation produces the smooth, waxy green material that serves as the grounding base of Atlantisite. Stichtite, a magnesium chromium hydroxycarbonate from the hydrotalcite group, develops later as an alteration mineral within chromium-rich Serpentinite, creating vivid purple patches and veins throughout the stone.

Structurally, Atlantisite is best described as a massive aggregate rather than a crystal with visible points or faces. Serpentine within the stone typically crystallizes in the monoclinic or trigonal systems depending on the specific species present, while stichtite crystallizes in the trigonal system.
