Amethyst is the February birthstone and the 6th and 17th anniversary stones. It is the purple variety of Quartz. Quartz is a mineral composed of silicon and oxygen, with a chemical composition of SiO₂. All other varieties of Quartz, such as yellow Citrine, green Praisolite, or pink Rose Quartz are colored due to tiny inclusions in the silica. The gorgeous purple color of Amethyst is due to inclusions of iron in the crystal structure.
